Sotavento: A Kitesurfing Mecca

After bringing the campervan over from Las Palmas to Morro Jable, we found ourselves in a picturesque port town that mixes quiet historical streets with the bustle of a working harbor. But our main target was further up the coast.

We headed straight to Playa de Sotavento. If you are into water sports, this place is legendary. It’s a true kitesurfing mecca defined by fine white sand and a colossal turquoise lagoon that dramatically fills and empties with the changing tides. We ended up staying for two straight weeks, riding the wind in the shallow, flat water of the lagoon.

After days filled with intense kiting adrenaline, we sought refuge in Costa Calma. Living up to its name, this peaceful town provided the perfect contrast. It offers smaller, sheltered beaches and quiet bars where you can unwind. One of the best parts about exploring this side of the island in a van is the freedom; while official campsites are rare, free camping is widely tolerated, allowing us to sleep with the sound of the ocean just outside our door.
